Gemini Notebook review: research from sources you choose
Gemini Notebook, formerly NotebookLM, is Google’s research notebook for asking questions about a selected source collection. It can summarize material, link answers to passages and create formats such as Audio Overviews. The source boundary is useful for focused study, but it does not establish that the uploaded sources are complete, current or correct.
What is Gemini Notebook?
Gemini Notebook is Google’s source-focused research and learning tool, renamed from NotebookLM in July 2026. Users create a notebook from materials they select, then ask questions, explore summaries and generate study-oriented outputs. Google describes citations that link responses to source passages and formats such as Audio Overviews. The product remains a standalone notebook while Google expands connections with the Gemini ecosystem.
This design is useful when the research corpus is known in advance: a student’s readings, a team’s product documentation or a set of interview notes. Rather than asking a general assistant to answer from broad context, the user can inspect the selected collection and follow references into it. Newer capabilities, including code execution for deeper analysis, have been announced with limited or phased availability, so users should check whether a feature is enabled for their account (Gemini Notebook Rename Announcement; Gemini Notebook in Google Workspace).
Do Notebook citations guarantee accuracy?
No. A citation makes it easier to find the passage behind an answer, but the passage can be misread, incomplete or itself unreliable. The notebook also cannot identify an important source that was never added. Check that a cited section supports the actual claim, compare conflicting sources and verify the source’s publication date. For current research, update the notebook with authoritative, recent material.
Audio and study outputs are useful transformations of a source set, not independent evidence. Listen or read critically, especially when names, numbers and qualifications matter. Keep sensitive material within the organization’s data and account policies.
How is Gemini Notebook different from web search?
A search engine helps discover web pages. Gemini Notebook is primarily for working with a source collection and understanding the material within it. Google has described broader Gemini and Search integrations, but users should still distinguish those discovery features from the notebook’s grounded reading workflow. The old NotebookLM URL slug remains in Techzip’s catalog for continuity; the current product name is Gemini Notebook. Gemini Notebook is a good fit for focused synthesis when the user controls source selection and follows citations back to the originals. (Gemini Notebook).
